Chair Design and Back Pain

There is an epidemic of douleur lombaire in America today. Each and every year about 65 million Americans will suffer from back pain, and about 90% of all Americans will suffer from back pain at some point in their adult lives.

If back pain were a contagious disease, there would be extreme measures being taken to contain it. But back pain isn't contagious. There are two culprits that cause so much of the back pain that Americans suffer. Neither is a little organism like the ones that cause colds or flu.

They are both big and sit right in the living rooms and dens of back pain sufferers all across the land and in front of their desks at work. One culprit is the easy chair, and the other is the office chair.

Most Americans spend a lot of time sitting. We sit at home in front of TV sets or at dinner tables and we sit at work -- or at least many of us do. The design of the chairs that we use so much can either cause us back pain, or they can help to prevent back pain.

Modern men and women need back support. Our ancestors sat on the floor or on the ground. They sometimes reclined against pillows, but they were forced to provide their own support when sitting on the floor or the ground. There was no chair back to provide support for their backs.

Modern Americans, however, rarely sit on the ground or on the floor. They sit in chairs. They sit in chairs at home and they sit in chairs at work and they spend a lot of time doing both. It is imperative that the chairs that they sit in provide the back support that is required to prevent back pain.

Back Pain and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a nine-month period in a woman's life that is filled with joy, apprehension, euphoria, fear, and so many other feelings.

Her body makes dramatic changes almost on a daily basis as this new little person inside of her grows. Her hormones are a mess. She gains weight in places that seemingly have nothing to do with being pregnant. Her body seems to insist on holding on to every drop of moisture that enters it until it chooses to expel it and that always happens at the worst possible moment.

Pregnancy is a thrilling but very emotionally and physically challenging time in the life of a woman. Many, even MOST, women will simply accept that back pain is a part of this normal process. But they really don't have to take back pain lying down, so to speak.

The douleur dorsale associated with pregnancy is caused by many things. The woman's body changes and the center of gravity shifts as the baby grows. The center of gravity is continually shifting with every ounce the baby gains.

There are exercises that can help to relieve the pain that this shift in the center of gravity causes. Strengthening muscles relieves pain. Search the Internet to find directions for performing these douleur lombaire-relieving exercises.

Maintaining good posture can help to relieve the pain of back ache. There is a tendency to arch the back in the later months of pregnancy. This arching only intensifies the back pain rather than relieving it. The straighter the backbone can be kept, the less pain there will be.

A pregnant woman should never pass up the opportunity for a backrub by the baby's father. The massage really can help to provide back pain relief and the massages are comforting in many other ways as well.

Causes of Back Pain

There are a multitude of causes for back pain. The most common cause is simple muscle strain.

The kind that happens when you lean over to pick a dropped pencil up off of the floor or pick up a child that stretches a muscle in an unusual way and causes a sharp and shooting pain is how most back pain begins.

There are, of course, a host of other ways that douleur dorsale can begin. Injury caused by a blow to the back can injure the muscles as well as the backbone and both can cause severe back pain. Falls are a major cause of back injury and back pain, particularly among the elderly.

There are diseases that can and do cause back pain. Kidneys that are not functioning correctly can certainly be the underlying cause of very severe back pain.
Arthritis is another disease that can be the root cause for back pain.

Poor posture contributed to douleur lombaire to a very high degree. Sometimes the muscle strains and even the ravages of disease to the back can be traced back to poor posture. Poor posture puts added stress and undue strain on the muscles in the back as well as on the anatomical structure itself.

Poor posture can result in a decreased blood flow and thus contribute to back pain and promote other diseases as well. Chairs, both those that are used in the home as well as the ones used in the office, are a major factor in producing back pain.

Backs need support, and they need support when people are required to sit for long periods of time at a desk, or in front of a computer especially. Hours spent lounging in a deep-cushioned easy chair means that the back is without any support and this can also contribute to back pain.
